Steinwender's Organic Gardens
This grower has a photo album.
We are located in Lake Helen, FL. Steinwender’s Organic Gardens grows on land that has been in the same family for over 40 years. The garden is surrounded by undeveloped land; no roads, no other homes except ours, just horses, cows, and forest.
This is a project started due to my frustration at the lack of local organic produce in the area. I am a stay at home mother to 2 girls, and this helps me continue to be with them.
I work the garden with my grandmother, it is a lot of work, but it is a labor of love and an experiment… and the results support something I believe in: we can do things differently, we don’t have to live off of factory farmed food, we can support our own local economies and still get a unique variety of good food!
We grow organically, working with resources from our property as much as possible, using recycled materials. In short, we practice sustainable farming. I haven’t figured out a practical way to lessen the use of plastic when sending the produce to customers, but I reuse plastic bags from the grocery store rather then getting new, unused bags.
We are not certified at this point in time, we do welcome visitors and questions about how we garden.
We try to grow produce that is not typically found in the grocery store, but we also grow a few more common varieties.
I am very grateful for this co-op! Previously I sold produce at a farmer’s market and being both a mother and a gardener, it took 2 days away from everything, which is very significant. One day of preparation, then the day spent at the market.
I also had to find someone to care for my daughters while I was at the market. Then I was at the mercy of customers and weather. Dealing with perishable foods, this works out so much better! So, thank you for supporting this co-op!!
